Heroin Use Increasing Among Young and Old Alike in North Peoria

The drug rehab North Peoria knows that heroin, a drug that has been around for centuries and was almost gone from the U.S. by the turn of the century is now back and with a passion too.  Actually, the Chicago area is now officially the heroin capital of the nation according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, (CDC).  This is an issue that has steadily worsened year after year since the turn of the century.

But what has prompted and inspired this spike in heroin abuse?  The truth is pretty grim to say the least.  Heroin and prescription opiate pain medications are both opium-based.  These pharmaceutical substances have for some time now been making a big impact on the nation.  It is perhaps one of the greatest crimes against mankind yet.  Prescription pain killers have the same chemical construction that heroin does, and they are just as addictive if not more so than heroin is.

However, to obtain prescription pain drugs illegally is not an easy thing to do, and they are quite expensive and sometimes hard to come by.  Drug cartels all across the world and particularly in Mexico and South America saw this as a great opportunity here.  Suddenly heroin was just showing up a lot more in the United States and was being sold much cheaper than prescription drugs were.  Because the drugs are quite similar, literally hundreds of thousands of Americans began to switch from prescription drug abuse to heroin abuse.  Now, there is a deadly and dangerous back and forth between these two substances with Americans constantly going back and forth and back and forth between these drugs from one to the next.  This is exactly what’s been occurring in North Peoria and the effects have been quite damaging to say the least.

The Truth Behind Heroin Abuse

Heroin abuse is having a bad effect on North Peoria and the whole Chicago area in general.  Heroin itself is also a big problem in the whole nation too for that matter.  For example:

  • Heroin is by far one of the top most concerning drugs in the nation today.  This is a substance that has become steadily and increasingly more serious and upsetting to say the least.  Heroin experienced a significant lull in popularity and for a long time the United States seemed to be free of the effects and influences of heroin abuse and addiction.  Now however, that is no longer the case, if it ever was to begin with.  Heroin now has more than two million Americans addicted to it, and heroin also claims the lives of over ten thousand Americans every single year.
  • Heroin abuse and prescription drug abuse sadly go hand in hand and in tandem.  For example, four in five new heroin users started out initially by misusing prescription painkillers.  It takes a lot of confront and resolve to shoot heroin, but it takes little resolve and confront to pop pills.  That’s why so many people start with pills and then graduate and advance on to heroin. As a consequence that inevitably came about from these transitions, the rate of heroin overdose deaths nearly quadrupled from the year of 2000 to the year of 2013. During this very same 14-year period, the rate of heroin overdose showed an average increase of no less than a full six percent per year from 2000 to 2010, followed by a larger average increase of 37% per year from 2010 to 2013.  All in all, heroin abuse has more than quadrupled since the turn of the century, and the deaths from heroin have increased by more than six-hundred percent.

To prevent this from getting any worse in North Peoria, it is now more than ever important for those addicted to heroin in the greater Chicago area to seek out and get into rehab as soon as is possible.  If this is done, then the problem will finally start to go down.
