Healthy Skin and Aging Don’t Have to Be at Odds

There is something curious that exists in the realm of health and beauty, something that seems to defy the realities of nature. It is the strange association between healthy skin and combating the effects of aging. For some reason, our culture seems to equate anti-aging measures with achieving and maintaining healthy skin.

The truth of the matter is that healthy skin and aging do not have to be at odds. This truth is one of the defining factors of Poethique, a Massachusetts skincare company that believes in the concept of beauty at any age. Neither healthy skin nor beauty is dependent on a person’s age, according to Poethique founder Gayatri Pradhan.

Pradhan is not alone in her assessment. She is backed by other health and beauty experts as well as medical science. Like any other aspect of individual health, healthy skin is a matter of taking good care of yourself. Your skin can be just as healthy at 80 as it was when you were 20.

  • Our Strange Perceptions of Beauty

It seems that this link between anti-aging and healthy skin is rooted in our society’s normal perceptions of beauty. How we view age is actually quite similar to how we view weight and size. But perceptions are merely personal opinion rooted in what is commonplace for the day.

Back in the Renaissance period, having a few extra pounds was actually viewed as attractive. Heavier people were considered healthier and more beautiful. Today, a few extra pounds is often seen as a bad thing. But it is just a matter of perception. The same is true of the effects of aging on the skin.

We used to talk about aging gracefully as a good thing. That is because we viewed age with a lot more respect. Older people were considered wiser, smarter, and more worthy of honor. That’s no longer the case. Something in our culture has changed, something that now causes us to look at age as a negative thing.

Unfortunately, our current perception of age has an effect on our perceptions of beauty. This leads us to believe that we must combat the effects of aging on the skin in order to achieve a certain image of good health. We fail to see older skin as healthy merely because it doesn’t look as young as it used to.

  • Diet, Exercise, and Skincare

At the end of the day, healthy skin at every age comes down to those same three things medical science is constantly reminding us about: diet, exercise, and common sense and skincare.

Diet is arguably the one thing that has the greatest influence on healthy skin. It is true that we are what we eat. Human skin has certain nutritional requirements that need to be met in order to maintain good health. Eat well and your skin will respond, regardless of your age.

As for exercise, science has already proved that it is necessary to maintain good health at every age. Fail to regularly exercise and nature will take its toll on your body. Your skin will not be spared, either.

Lastly is common sense skincare. Taking care of your skin is just as important as taking care of any other part of your body. Common sense skincare involves deep cleansing and moisturizing. It involves keeping the skin covered during the extremes of both summer and winter. It involves things like avoiding hot showers and aggressive exfoliation.

Healthy skin and aging do not have to be at odds. As they say at Poethique, you can enjoy beautiful and healthy skin at any age.
